TALKING DONKEY

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a steadfast spirit within me."

[Psalm 51:10]

Has there ever been a time when you tried to force something to happen? I feel like most of us have at some point. It’s like the harder you try the worse it gets.

“Whatever could this mean? and What shall we do?”

The story in Numbers 22 about Balaam and his donkey makes me look at my immovable situations differently.

I’ve always heard how stubborn donkeys are, but I read that this is due to them having a keen sense of self preservation. They don’t want to be forced into something that they feel isn’t safe.

How about that?

Balaam’s donkey is the perfect example of this! He saw the angel of the LORD with a sword and the donkey laid down. No matter how many times Balaam hit him, the donkey wouldn’t move. The donkey saw the spiritual realm and saved his owners life.

Troy Brewer teaches that we should not ask why in our circumstances. I love this because that is often our first reaction to painful or frustrating circumstances. Asking why causes us to doubt the sovereignty and love of God. He references Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit came. It was quite an event! The people asked two questions, “whatever could this mean?” and “what shall we do?”.

I challenge you to apply these questions to your situation.

The best part of this story is that the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth. Instead of having a coronary, Balaam conversated with his donkey! The donkey called out the truth in the situation and made Balaam admit that the donkey had never behaved this way before.

Sometimes the Lord will speak through our circumstances! Can you imagine how Balaam felt when the Lord opened his eyes and he saw the angel with the sword and realized the donkey had saved his life?

Here is what we must remember, when we are walking with God, have a repentant heart and clothed in His righteousness we can trust that the Lord is working behind the scenes on our behalf.

One of the key points in this story is Balaam’s repentance. It is so important for us to ask God to cleanse our heart so that we can see the world through His eyes and trust Him in our circumstances.

I pray today you find hope for your circumstances!
